The Indispensibles take part in the Royal Marines Commando Challenge

The Indispensables team are no strangers to Woodbury Common and the Commando Challenge course. All members of 513Troop at CTC 30 years ago, this year, they hope to complete the 10k course, hopefully without the screams of the training team!
Having kept in touch with one another, and wishing to celebrate their 30 year reunion, the team were looking out for activities for the weekend. It was their old troop leader, Justin Smallwood, who mentioned the Commando Challenge fell on that week, and team member Simon Beeson set to work, signing up the four participating in the event itself, as well as those ‘supporting’ from the refreshments tent!
The name ‘The Indispensables’ came from Simon, who felt the phrase reflected the group of ‘older guys’ who are old hands but good at what they do. Ultimately, he wanted something different from the usual connotations that could have been used with reference to the Marines.
Three of the group, Simon, Gary Fox and Glenn Howard ran the course together during the Commando Phase at CTC, and are looking forward to doing it in a more relaxed mood than before. Though they appreciate they might not be the fastest three running the course anymore – 30 years is a long time, and a lot of beer has been consumed in the intervening period - they are looking forward to bringing back great memories all the same, and the camaraderie the day will bring.
Simon had this to say for others competing in the Challenge. “Relax into the event. One thing age has taught me is that this type of event is there for the challenge and the event itself. Everyone should go home being happy in the effort they push out on the day, whatever and how much that is. It is what you make of it!”
