When is the Commando Challenge?
The 2012 Royal Marines COMMANDO Challenge is being held on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th October 2012. First teams will start at 0900, with teams starting every 2 minutes until approx 1500.
The event is based at Bicton Arena, Yettington near East Budleigh in Devon - for those with satnav the postcode is EX9 7BL. The actual Commando Challenge cross country route is on Woodbury Common some 2 miles from Bicton Arena.
The Commando Challenge is now in its 20th year and utilises the world famous Royal Marines Endurance training course - still used today as a training facility for new recruits.
The minimum age for competitors is 16 at the time of the Challenge. Team Captains must be 18 or over at the time of the event.
Amount of competitors
It was agreed some years ago that the Organisers would limit the numbers of runners to 4,000 over the two days. For the past 5 years the numbers of actualy participants wanting to enter has great exceeded this number. In recent years we have had to refuse entry to +/- 2,000 competitors as we have reached the cap for the event.
The majority of the 100 Stewards per day are made up of either serving Royal Marines or volunteers supplied by the two charities benefitting from the fundraising. If you would like to help please call the Devon Air Ambulance Trust and they will be able to advise.
The Challenge caters for both our runners and spectators by supplying ample free parking; secure baggage, changing and shower facilities; hot and cold refreshments; trade stands; etc etc etc. Please bring cash or cheques as there is a charge for some of these services.
